Two things before the weekend

Rip it up

Item 1

If you have the space and desire, you could try the very therapeutic practice through which artist Tamara Torres guided us at a Martin Luther King Day gathering earlier this week. I’m paraphrasing here and hope I do it justice:

  • Gather paper, a piece of heavier cardboard/card stock if you have it, markers or crayons, and glue
  • Put on music
  • Set a timer and draw/doodle for a few minutes (we did 3 at the event; in the description, it looks like she sometimes recommends 10). Let the music move your hand around. Leave marks on the paper without thinking too much.
  • Rip up the paper!
  • Using the heavier board as a canvas, use your ripped-up pieces to make a collage.
Dozens of collages stacked neatly on a shiny windowsill. The jagged bright scraps of paper that stick out from the pile are a nice contrast to the frosted window, bare branches, and snow outside.
The stack of participant collages at the end of the workshop.

Item 2

Claudia Horwitz is posting free daily guided meditations for the first 100 days. I am finding it hard to sit quietly for 10 minutes, but the other day’s Expanding and Contracting one was worth the try.

Wishing you peace,

JCS
