Thursday's two things

Quote graphic that reads People ARE doing things. You will meet those people when YOU start doing things.
Not sure anyone who reads this newsletter needs this, but I had a conversation yesterday with someone IRL who did.

Item 1: Make a weekend plan

Something else The Adaway Group said last week on their polycrisis call was (paraphrasing here) that if you feel depressed, you might ask yourself: Am I burnt out and thus need to step back and recharge? Or am I disconnected, and what I need is actually to move forward into a place of action or leadership?

Whatever you need, maybe take a moment to put something specific on your calendar for this weekend or another time soon.

  • File under "grim, boring, nitty-gritty self-care" ➡️ If applicable, check your estimated retirement benefits. Musk and the Republicans are coming for Social Security.
  • If you're up for rallies and protests ➡️ Reminder that Stand Up for Science is tomorrow and #TeslaTakeDown events continue through the weekend, from Philly to Fayetteville to Honolulu. (Tesla stock is dropping.)
  • Have a printer? ➡️ Author Celeste Ng rounded up a whole bunch of things you could print out and post around your town or leave in public spaces for people to pick up. I might make some cancer research stickers myself.
  • Maybe your routine needs a shake-up? ➡️ A friend told me this morning that as she looks ahead to the weekend, she's not feeling aligned with her family's usual religious observance. Maybe, she mused, she'll ask her partner to take their kids solo, and she'll break with routine and volunteer at DC Diaper Bank instead. (Shoutout to Emily who put this org on our radar!) Is there something you do habitually that you might like to replace with something else?

Item 2

Quick background: Rep. Al Green was the one person who disrupted Trump's speech the other night enough to get escorted out. "An 11-term Democrat representing the Houston area, [he] stood up and pointed his cane as he shouted, 'You have no mandate to cut Medicaid'" and later said he would do it all again. Today the House voted to censure him. Here are the Democrats who voted to censure.

If you live in one of these districts and this lights your fire ➡️ Call them and yell! 2) Figure out what candidates are running against them. Get on those mailing lists or follow on social media. Use this moment to get other people on those lists. Raise money and primary them OUT.

As Prerna wrote, decorum will fucking kill us.

Here for You is a (usually) short weekday newsletter about ways that resistance, art, and community care are necessary, doable, and (often) fun even and especially in these "First 100 Days." Please forward to a friend who might like the reminders.
